-Max Fleischer (1861-1930)
Richard Paul Max Fleischer was a German painter and bryologist (study of mosses). He took art classes in Poland and subsequently became an art teacher. He continued studies in Munich and Paris, before being invited invited to the island of Java in the Dutch East Indies to illustrate the various mosses found there. It was in Java where he
learned how to make "batik prints" from vegetable dyes.
